M16 AISG Connector

The M16 connector was the first connection system produced by Binder, and it has been used in the audio industry for over 50 years. Even today, the M16 connector is considered a "matter of course" connection solution, suitable for a wide range of indoor applications. Thanks to continuous development and improvement, the M16 connector is now the ideal choice of specifiers who are looking for an economical, efficient, rugged, and durable screw-locking connector that can accommodate up to 24 contacts (with or without EMI shielding).

The Metabee M16 connector was initially developed to meet the requirements of the German Standardization Association (DIN Standards), which established the standards for circular connectors for analog audio signals. They have been widely used for many years and have gained consumer recognition through the audio industry, commonly referred to as DIN standard connectors.

High Pin Count and up to IP68 Protection

While still offering its original non-shielded IP40 DIN format, the latest version of the M16 connector has come a long way from its earlier audio versions. Driven by the market demand for lower contact resistance, more pin counts, and higher protection levels, today's M16 connectors can accommodate 2 to 24 contacts. They are mainly encapsulated in a metal housing that can be shielded or unshielded to protect against electromagnetic interference (EMI), and some versions provide up to IP67 or IP68 international protection.

Versatility in application is ensured as a range of alternatives are available for cable installations through soldering, screw and crimp terminations of straight or right-angle connectors. Pre-terminated cables are available as well as options for front or rear-fixed panel sockets, both as the standard solder bucket version, and for frontal fixation of PCBs for reflow and preterminated flexible PCBs.

This connector style, combined with a rugged and durable design and good environmental tolerance, makes the M16 widely used in instrumentation, measurement, and indoor sensors, with a larger pin count than what M8 and M12 sensors provide. Other applications include pneumatic control, gas and pressure measurement, torque sensors, and motor speed controllers.

The M16 connector's sophisticated design provides reliable connectivity in high-density connections. The connector joint has locking functionality, which prevents the plug from falling out or accidental operation due to random interference. Additionally, the modular design of the M16 connector allows for easy assembly for different connection methods and customized designs.

Suited for the Launch of 5G

The latest application of the M16 connector includes 5G networks, where binder's AISG-compatible connector aims to provide highly international protection for selected outdoor installations. AISG (Antenna Interface Standards Group) defines control and monitoring standards for antenna line equipment in the wireless industry. For instance, binder's 423 and 723 series M16 connectors offer an 8-pin DIN variant that uses four to five contacts. These products comply with the AISG C485 standard and can be used as male/female shielded cable and panel-mount connectors. These connectors are suitable for all wireless networks, meet the IP68 protection level requirements during connection, and provide maximum reliability even under extreme external conditions.

Data Transmission Speeds of up to 10Gbits/s

One of binder's latest additions to their M16 product line is the X-coded connector that can handle the data speed required by today's sensor-based automation production facilities. The data transmission can reach an impressive 10Gbits/s. The combination of high pin count and a compact size with a nominal diameter of 18.5 mm and a length of 60 mm means that the M16 connector is an excellent alternative to more expensive connector systems. The special short version with a height of only 37 mm and the right-angle version mean that the M16 can be used for applications with very tight spaces.

The M16 connector is suitable for cables with diameters ranging from 4.0 to 10 mm, rated voltage of 250 V, and can withstand pulse voltages of up to 1,500 V. Its current handling capability can reach up to 7A (at 40ºC). As equipment manufacturers increasingly demand higher EMI shielding performance, more applications require the use of well-shielded connectors for cable shielding systems. For optimal performance, a 360-degree complete shield achieved through a shield ring effectively attenuates electromagnetic interference in a wider range of frequency bands.
